Barge Canal April 15, 2003 WPTZ NEWS CHANNEL 5 The Barge Canal in Burlington has been an interesting public involvement program from the beginning. In 1983, the Pine Street Barge Canal was put onto the National Priorities List as a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency. Through an extensive public process, community organizations led by the Lake Champlain Committee crafted an acceptable alternative to the EPA's proposed solution for capping the superfund site. The descendant companies of those that worked along the barge canal, including Green Mountain Power, were charged with cleaning up the site. To learn more about the remediation project, visit the US EPA Pine Street Canal fact sheet. An archeological survey was another important part of the remediation. To read more about this project, visit the recent Champlain 2000 story about the Canal Boat survey.
