Scientists monitor effectiveness of Asian clam treatment in Lake George
Meg Modley, Aquatic Invasive Species Management Coordinator with the Lake Champlain Basin Program, collects water samples from beneath benthic barrier mats on the bottom of Lake George. The samples are analyzed for dissolved oxygen to determine if the mats are effective in suffocating invasive Asian clams. Asian clams were discovered in Lake George in August 2010, and have colonized nearly six acres of lake bottom in dense beds of nearly 600 clams per square meter. The clams can alter water chemistry, possibly contributing to algal blooms and providing a calcium-rich breeding ground for other potential invasive species such as zebra or quagga mussels. The Lake George Asian Clam Eradication Project has produced a video about the project. View it on YouTube here.
