Lake Champlain Cooperative Boat Wash Program

The overland transport  of boats, personal watercraft, fishing gear and other aquatic equipment is a significant means by which zebra mussels, Eurasian water-milfoil, water chestnut and other aquatic invasive species (AIS) are spread between water bodies.

Pressure washing has been shown to be a very effective method for removing AIS from boats and other equipment. The LCBP and its partners have developed the Lake Champlain Cooperative Boat Wash Program in order to assist boaters in finding local car wash stations that are suitable for pressure washing boats, trailers and other equipment. The Cooperative Boat Wash Program helps provide boaters with the equipment necessary to properly clean their vessel and rid it of aquatic hitchhikers. To prevent the introduction of harmful invasive species into new waters, clean boats after use and/or before launching.

Why It's Important

Invasive species outcompete native plants and animals for food, nutrients and space. They alter the ecosystem in which they invade and can be very detrimental to the health of the ecosystem as a whole. In many cases they can deplete fisheries, obstruct waterways, clog recreational areas and greatly reduce biodiversity. There are now 49 known non-native species occupying Lake Champlain, many of which are invasive. There are also many more non-native species that threaten to invade Lake Champlain in the near future. Once an invasive is established it can be impossible to remove, and only through taking preventative measures can they be kept out. This is why it is extremely important to take every precaution to prevent the spread  of invasive species into new areas. In order to prevent the spread of AIS in New York and Vermont, you should utilize this program and/or wash your boat/equipment before and after transport.
