Sea Lamprey Tagging October 7, 2002 WPTZ NEWS CHANNEL 5
Scientists are asking anglers on Lake Champlain to collect sea lamprey, dead or alive, during 2002 and 2003. That is because 2,600 of the animals have been invisibly tagged to help indicate the stream in which they spawned. By collecting the tagged lamprey, the scientists can tell which streams contribute the most lamprey to the Lake and how far they can move from their natal stream. Cash and tackles prizes will be awarded to the most lamprey returned, lamprey returned from the furthest distance from its stream of origin, and selection from a random drawing. The research is a cooperative project by Lake Champlain Sea Grant, the University of Vermont and Cornell University, with funding from the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission.
To participate, visit the Lake Champlain Sea Lamprey Tagging Project website for instructions and information on where to drop off lamprey. The Salmon River, AuSable River and Little AuSable River in New York were treated during late September and early October. An application for Lewis Creek in Vermont, which was scheduled for on Tuesday, October 8, 2002, has been changed due to low water conditions. The lamprey treatment program is a joint project among the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Hotlines have been setup for the public to inquire about the treatments:
