Outreach Materials and Programs

The LCBP offers a variety of outreach materials and programs for schools and community groups (bottom of page) about Lake Champlain's watershed.

  • Champlain Connection & Champlain 2000
    Champlain Connection is a long-running series on WPTZ-TV (Channel 5) on the 6pm news. Champlain 2000 was an award-winning program news series on WPTZ-TV (Channel 5). Videos of some of the nine 30-minute special reports may be borrowed from the LCBP or check with your school librarian as they were mailed to many area schools. FREE!
  • Don't "P" on Your Lawn brochure and Lawn to Lake website.
    In 2006 the LCBP began working with several groups in the watershed to encourage homeowners who use lawn fertilizer to switch to phosphorus-free fertilizer.

    This Lake Alive! is an interdisciplinary handbook for teaching and learning about the Lake Champlain Basin, written by Amy Demarest and published by Shelburne Farms. It received significant financial support from the LCBP.

  • World Lakes Teaching Resources
    Follow ECHO's mascot NEWTon as he visits the world's lakes! Science, math, language arts, and social studies are covered in these materials for grades 5-8.
Programs for School and Community Groups

watershed model Our Education and Outreach staff offers free presentations to schools and community groups in the Basin. All programs can be tailored to meet the needs of different grade levels. Please call us several weeks in advance to schedule at (800) 468-5227 or (802) 372-3213.

  • Watershed Model
    Grade Level: 1 to 12     Approximate Time: 25-40 minutes
    This hands-on, tabletop model helps students understand how polluted runoff impairs lakes and rivers. Topics covered include point and nonpoint pollution sources (urban, industrial, forested, and agricultural), toxic substances, phosphorus, pollution prevention, and watershed planning. This demonstration can be tailored to many grade levels, and is often incorporated with our slideshow. Teachers may also borrow this model (call several weeks in advance to reserve).   • Lake Champlain Issues Slideshow
    Grade Level: 4 to 12 & Adults     Approximate Time: 30-40 minutes
    Our slideshow presents an overview of the environmental and cultural issues facing the Lake Champlain Basin and efforts to implement the pollution prevention and restoration plan, Opportunities for Action. Topics include watersheds, water quality (phosphorus and toxics), nonnative nuisance aquatic species (zebra mussels, lamprey, water chestnut, milfoil), wildlife, wetlands, cultural heritage, individual and community stewardship, and recreation.   • Wetland Metaphors
    Grade Level: 1 to 12     Approximate Time: 15-30 minutes Students are presented with a variety of hands-on objects for investigation as metaphors for natural functions of wetlands. Topics covered include wetlands in the Lake Champlain Basin, the Atlantic flyway, wetland losses, and the values and functions of wetlands. FREE!
