Chazy Reef

Click to view Chazy Reef Formation (132 KB) The dark Chazy limestone of southern Isle La Motte is from the oldest reef in the world--480 million years ago--and it's teaming with fossils. Several island quarries provided this famous decorative black marble used for major projects, such as the Brooklyn Bridge, and several local buildings.

A sculpture designed as a bicycle rest stop/interpretive exhibit at the Town Recreation Area commemorates the Isle La Motte limestone and the preservation of its geologic and cultural history.
