Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership Grants Available
Grand Isle, VT – The Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership (CVNHP) and the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) request proposals for cultural/natural heritage research and interpretation projects. Funding for these projects comes from the National Park Service. The two grant categories include:
Wayside Exhibit Grants
The CVNHP/LCBP will award up to 12 new wayside exhibits to communities and organizations to interpet:
- the history of the American Civil War in various “home front” communties of in Clinton, Essex, Warren, Washington, and Saratoga counties of New York, and Franklin, Grand Isle, Chittenden, Addison, Rutland and Bennington counties of Vermont;
- the War of 1812, enhancing the interpretive trail developed in 2011;
- the commercial evolution of the various communties of the Champlain and upper Hudson River valleys with an emphasis on with an traditional and modern uses of water in those communities.
The grants will provide English-French translation and design assistance along with complete fabricated interpretive signs—an estimated $1,500 value each—at 12 sites. The budget also covers design and translation services. No funds will be awarded with these grants.
The deadline for wayside exhibit grant applications is December 7, 2012.
CVNHP Implementation Grants
The CVNHP/LCBP will provide the implemetation grants of up to $5,000 for the research and interpretation of the arts and humanities in the national heritage area. The CVNHP/LCBP will provide grants of up to $5,000 for the following catagories:
- folk arts and folk life;
- recreational and/or commercial fishing;
- various themed (e.g. music, painting, philosophy, religious, etc.) historical “camps” in region during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The deadline for the CVNHP Implementation Grant proposals is December 20, 2012.

Additional Information
The authorization legislation of the CVNHP, the National Heritage Areas Act of 2006 (Public Law 109-338), states that the heritage area was established to recognize the importance of the historical, cultural, and recreational resources of the Champlain Valley; to preserve, protect, and interpret those resources; to enhance the tourism economy; and to encourage partnerships among state/provincial and local governments and non-profit organizations in New York, Quebec, and Vermont to carry out the purposes of the legislation.
