Winter Rye for Forage or Straw?

Farming in the Basin Meetings are on-farm meetings that focus on lake friendly farming practices and techniques. Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Lake Champlain Basin Program will again be collaborating this summer with other farm service providers to highlight practices such as cover cropping, precision agriculture for livestock operations, tile drainage water management, agricultural forestry practices and alternate water systems for prescribed grazing.
In anticipation of a spring or summer forage seeding, the Clinton County Soil & Water’s No Till Drill was used to seed cereal rye as a winter cover and spring crop. Post rye harvest, the no-till drill will again be used to seed down the field without tillage.

Join us at the Norm Davis Farm, 82 Jersey Swamp Road in Beekmantown to evaluate the progress and discuss the options available for harvest and replanting. We will be discussing planting dates and seeding rates for rye and other small grains here in the North Country, while looking at the current crop for stand viability and any harvest concerns.

These meetings are outdoors and in the event of inclement weather we will attempt to work between the rain drops. Come prepared for the elements. Refreshments will be provided. Your sign up is appreciated.
