While the mountain featured in this edition of Place in Basin is known and loved among Northeast ski enthusiasts, this place was tricky to guess!
Seen here from Copperas Pond, Whiteface Mountain rises into low hanging clouds. The author of this post suspects that we are seeing the Upper and Lower Parkway trails, but having never skied at Whiteface cannot confirm that this is true.
Whiteface Mountain is the fifth-highest peak in the state of New York. The impressive elevation comes with pros for skiers and snowboarders, like long runs, and cons, like wind exposure and the possibility for icy conditions.
Whiteface sits among the Adirondack High Peaks, which are a hotspot for many kinds of recreation outside of skiing: hiking, biking, paddling, angling, and more.
Copperas Pond is one of countless ponds and lakes interspersed throughout the High Peaks. It’s deep, well-oxygenated waters are home to lake trout. It is one of the few ponds within the Ausable River watershed to be home to this sought-after fish species. The Ausable Freshwater Center has been monitoring the pond’s temperature, dissolved oxygen content, conductance, and acidity since 2016.
