Spiny Softshell Turtle Conservation

Photo: Zoo de Granby

The Zoo de Granby in Québec conducted an outreach program to educate the public about the endangered spiny softshell turtle and engage citizens in actions promoting the health of the entire ecosystem. They conducted virtual and in-person programs highlighting the zoo’s spiny softshell turtle recovery project, participated in the Mikinak Turtle Festival, and coordinated four releases of the hatchlings in the rivière aux Brochets (Pike River). They conducted an additional social marketing campaign to encourage boaters to reduce speeds near critical habitat and municipal officials and landowners to protect riparian areas and water quality.
