Artist-in-Residence

The Friends of the Winooski River, based in Montpelier, VT, is hosting a residency program for two artists to work with schools and community groups in the Winooski River watershed. The program involves students and members of the public in creating artwork that helps interpret Lake Champlain Basin scientific data, cultural trends, or historical facts, and express their connection to their watershed and relationship with the changing climate and its impacts on our landscapes and communities. The artists have worked with students at Champlain Elementary School in Burlington, South Burlington High School, and Harwood Union Middle and High School, in Moretown, VT. Students developed streamside signs that interpret the Mad River watershed on a trail behind the Harwood school and interpreted some of the Basin’s environmental challenges using the 2021 Lake Champlain State of the Lake Report as a prompt. Students have shared their work and connections at public exhibitions in their communities.
