The Lamoille County Conservation District (LCCD) developed The River Runs Through Us – Lamoille Library Hop, featuring a series of seven educational sessions held at different libraries in the Lamoille River watershed. These sessions emphasized the importance of healthy rivers, how participants could contribute to river health, and the significance of the Lamoille River to their community. By partnering with local libraries, the program reached a wide audience and offered free interdisciplinary activities that combined science, art, and cultural history.
Each library session provided two hours of interactive learning, where participants explored topics such as watershed science, river ecosystems, and water chemistry. Beyond the science, the program integrated creative elements like poetry and art to deepen participants’ connection to their local river. Participants received “watershed passports” to track their progress and earn certificates of completion if they attended all sessions. The program left participants with a better understanding of how rivers function and a sense of responsibility to protect them.
After the program, the participating libraries received water quality activity bins, allowing them to continue offering river-related educational opportunities. These bins contained hands-on exercises, books, and materials to help patrons learn independently or as part of home school curricula.
