Abstract:

The Archaeology on the Farm Project of 1991-1993 was an effort to record, evaluate, interpret and preserve cultural resources on Addison County farms that were the site of Soil Conservation Service projects. Another goal of the project was to develop a best-practices approach to cultural resource protection during SCS projects.

Chapter 1 of the Demonstration Report outlines background and methods of the project. Chapter 2 describes overall cultural resource results and gives case studies for 11 projects, out of a total of 86. Chapter 3 describes the public education and outreach component of the Archaeology on the Farm Project. Chapter 4 discusses project results, specific issues and recommendations. Part II gives an overview of the prehistory and history of Addison County and a preliminary statement on developing sensitivity models for cultural resources in the county. An appendix lists “further examples of public outreach to local organizations.”
