Abstract:

This report summarizes data collected on Lake Champlain walleye from 1983 to 1992 and reviews recent literature to guide future assessment and research efforts. Based on length-at-age data, individual growth of spawning walleye was intermediate to that of walleye in other large lakes and the research found no indication of particularly strong or weak cohorts. The report includes spawning population size and annual survival data for Great Chazy River, South Bay, and Poultney River walleye. This data varied greatly over time for all three locations. The researchers also tagged walleye to study their seasonal movements. The report includes harvest and catch rates, mean total length of walleye captured by diary cooperators, and sea lamprey wounding rates. The researchers recommend increased monitoring, assessment, and research. Based on the available data, they were unable to recommend measures of success or changes in angling regulations to the management agencies. Note: data available in report.
