Abstract:

This report provides information regarding the feasibility of establishing a restoration program for lake sturgeon in Lake Champlain. Considering the recent lack of lake sturgeon sightings in Lake Champlain tributaries and the species’ long age to maturity, the authors conclude that the likelihood of achieving restoration through natural reproduction of current residents is extremely small. The report reviews the available life history and ecological requirements of lake sturgeon, determines the availability of suitable habitat in Lake Champlain and its tributaries, and develops stocking guidelines based on a lake sturgeon population model.
