Abstract:

Overland transport of harmful aquatic invasive species (AIS) by recreational boaters and anglers has been recognized as a threat for nearly two decades (Bossenbroek, Johnson, Peters, & Lodge, 2007; Leung, Bossenbroek, & Lodge, 2006; Schneider, et al., 1998). Combating AIS through public outreach is the best strategy for preventing the spread of AIS (Great Lakes Regional Collaboration, 2005; U.S. Congress, 1993). The objective of the project was to administer structured surveys and interviews to fishing tournament anglers and tournament organizers to assess AIS knowledge, attitudes and behaviors.  Findings have been utilized to encourage development of AIS spread preventions protocol for tournament groups who commence fishing tournament events on Lake Champlain.
